The first Carnival, Traditions/Customs and Railway museums in Austria are located in Knittelfeld. Although the model railway exhibit doesn't count as a museum, it is worth seeing.

The Museum tells the history of the railway and the social lives of workers on the railroad. A functioning signal box will set a train route and will then be driven on a simulator. There are pocketwatches and railway ball donations on display as well as a collection of railroad hats, which made it into the Guinness Book of World Records.  With over 1000 m² of exhibition space there is something interesting for everyone. An absolute highlight is the possibility to ride on a garden train which is powered by either steam or diesel locomotives.

Model railroad

Model railroad
Model railroad

Covering an area of 160 m² with 700m long tracks are around 500 computer controlled locomotives and 2,000 wagons in operation. 190 switches, 5 train stations and 280 signals complete the artwork of this authentic railroad. The spectrum ranges from simple railway stations, a rail yard with a functional hump yard to a central station with a functioning train wagon wash. A narrow gauge railroad also blends beautifully into the landscape depicted. Not only are trains making their way along the model railway, but cars also make their rounds. There is even a staged fire brigade. To round out the work of art, day, night and twilight operatioins are all demonstrated.
